Lens Used in CCTV Camera

Every CCTV camera has a lens, and the lens decides what the camera sees. Without a lens there is no picture at all; with the wrong lens there is a picture of the wrong thing, too wide to show detail or too narrow to cover the area. This guide explains, in plain language, what the lens in a CCTV camera does and which kinds of lens are used.
The guide uses only the lens categories listed by Hangzhou Ai Ke Electronics Co., Ltd.: CCTV Lens, C Mount Industrial Lens, M12 Board Lens, Varifocal/Zoom Lens and Low Distortion Lens. It does not introduce other lens kinds as offerings, and it states no model or specification.
What the lens does
The lens gathers light from the scene and forms it into a picture for the camera. Three things about that picture matter most to a buyer: how wide the view is, how much detail it shows, and whether shapes in the scene stay true in the picture. Those three questions, width, detail and shape, cover most lens choices for CCTV cameras.
The camera behind the lens matters too. A good lens on an unsuitable camera, or a good camera behind an unsuitable lens, will both disappoint, which is why an inquiry should name the camera and the lens need together, rather than either alone.
Kinds of lens used in CCTV cameras
General CCTV lenses cover the ordinary CCTV camera job: watching a premises, an area or a point. Varifocal and zoom lenses cover jobs where the view must be adjusted, either at installation or during use. Wide-angle lenses cover jobs where a whole area must be seen from one position, and narrower lenses cover jobs where a point must be seen in detail.
Industrial and board lenses cover cameras that are not ordinary CCTV cameras: industrial cameras in working environments and board cameras in compact devices. Those cameras use the C Mount industrial and M12 board categories on this site, and buyers with those cameras should start on those category pages.
How to choose, in brief
Start with the camera, then the scene, then the question the picture must answer. If the camera is a board camera, the M12 pages apply. If it is an industrial camera, the C Mount industrial pages apply. If it is an ordinary CCTV camera, the CCTV, security and surveillance pages apply, and the varifocal, wide-angle and zoom pages narrow the choice by view.
Then confirm the exact lens, if one is offered, together with its specifications, minimum order quantity, lead time and price, and confirm compatibility with the camera. Certificates available upon request.
Frequently asked questions
Does every CCTV camera use the same kind of lens?
No. Ordinary CCTV cameras, industrial cameras and board cameras use different lens families, and the choice follows the camera.
What is the most important lens question?
What the picture must show: a whole area, a particular point, or both at different times. That answer drives the rest.
Is a model recommended here?
No model is published on this site. Describe your camera and scene in an inquiry and ask which lens, if any, fits them.
